You Have 11.3 Million Reasons to Stay in the Fight for Racial Justice

On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, 11.3 million people posted a black square on social media to take part in a collective action of resistance to anti-Black racism and state sanctioned violence.

3 years later, allies are still "listening and learning" and the future looks just as bleak -- if not more -- than it did before.

What happened?

Activism > Allyship

The first mistake was making allyship the goal when it was always about activism.

In a capitalist, ableist, cis-hetero-patriarchal society in which every body is commodified, and titles are often valued above attributes, "ally" became the go-to multi-use name tag everyone slapped on their chests.

"Ally" is the banner of passive support requiring little education, technique, strategizing, and investment.

Allyship is inherently performative.

Liberation > Anti-Racism

The second mistake was focusing on anti-racism.

Racism is a symptom of a larger, much deeper issue.

Anti-racism alone won't get us free.

Work that "grasps at the root" will.

Let's discover that work and keep moving forward, together.

Go from doubting your abilities as an ally to knowing how to take consistent, strategic, and meaningful action as a co-conspirator.
